How to Love: Unconditionally

As I have pondered what love really looks like, I have always refrained from using the term 'unconditional.' It seems like it should only describe the love the Father has for us and not the love we should have for one another because it is a holy, righteous, unattainable love. But I think that is a lie. This lie says that we can make excuses and justify loving certain people at certain times because we do not have God's perfect love. We do not strive to love unconditionally because we believe it cannot be attained.

Although it is true that we will never be perfectly righteous while in the body which has not been restored, it is no excuse to stop striving for perfection! We cannot say that it is impossible for us to love someone due to our imperfection when we have God's
power within us. We reach into the great depths of perfect love He shows us in order to love others perfectly! We do not depend on ourselves so that we are now without excuse.

So what does it mean to love unconditionally? It means our love is not dependent at all on others. We choose to love because God first loved us. And we must choose daily to love. It is not an easy one time decision. We must choose to show kindness, grace, and compassion to everyone we come into contact with. We must not let anything they do or say determine how we treat them.

This unconditional love does not come from ourselves and we must be reminded of that. It comes from the only One who can love perfectly and we have to constantly lean and depend on Him in order to love others.
